Electric Picnic 2017 – first lineup announcement

THERE is still 151 days to go until Electric Picnic 2017 and the 55,000 capacity festival sold out this morning before any lineup announcement.

The line-up announcement happened today and there is something for everyone on the bill .
Duran Duran and Madness for the 80s kids – The XX and Interpol for the indie heads – Run The Jewels and A Tribe Called Quest released strong hip hop albums in the last year – Pete Tong and his orchestral trawl thru the dance classics will build on the Jenny Greene showstopper from last year.

The Cranberries back on tour

LIMERICK band The Cranberries will tour in 2016. The first show announced is for Thursday June 9 at Festi’Neuch Openair Festival happening in Neuchatel, Switzerland from June 9 to June 12. See http://festineuch.ch/ for more details.
More shows are expected from the band during the summer, no Limerick gig has yet been announced.
Guitarist Noel Hogan posted on Twitter, “”This is one of a few shows planned for this summer. More Cranberries dates coming.”

dREA in running for Electric Picnic

LIMERICK artist dREA (Damien Drea) is in a long list of hopefuls competing to play at Electric Picnic 2014. The musician is one of 30 acts in the final stages of 2fm’s Play The Picnic with Oxfam. A shortlist of 10 contestants will be announced on Thursday July 9, all of which will play the 2fm Oxfam Stage at the festival which runs from Friday August 29. The overall winner will be added to the line-up for the Cosby Stage.

Make your move in Limerick this weekend

MAM2_Limerick_29062013_0178The Make A Move Festival of Hip-Hop and Urban Culture returns to Limerick city this weekend.

AFTER a successful launch in 2012, Make A Move Festival returns this weekend. Confirmed for the weekend are DJs Johnny Moy and DJ Koncept at The Library, Captain Moonlight, Fathoms and Flying Buttresses will perform at the Hip hop Showcase in Blind Pig. Colm Kenefick plays Mickey Martin’s and DJ Aoife Ni Canna will discuss her recent radio documentary series on Ireland’s club culture, ‘Folklore from the Dancefloor’.

From July 25 to 28 expect all elements of Hip Hop from Street Dancing, MC’ing, Rapping and Street Art and Graffiti showcased from all around Ireland and abroad with a special focus on the work of the emerging talent and skill from Limerick.

This year’s dance element of the festival is an fusion of hip hop dance workshops for young people in local communities and a celebration of Hip Hop dance culture on the streets of Limerick. “The festival has an exciting weekend of dance events lined up that blend in with other elements of hip hop culture such as the Park Paint Parade and fantastic hip hop gigs taking place throughout the city,” says festival director Rani Dabrai.

Some of last year’s popular events are back again, the Block Party on the Saturday 27 happening on Thomas Street and the Dance Battles happening in Daghda Space.

This Thursday 25, The  Learning Hub Limerick will host some hip-hop workshops covering MC’ing, scratching and rapping.

The Hip Hop Showcase happens in The Blind Pig, featuring Captain Moonlight, Fathoms and Flying Buttresses. Kilkenny’s Captain Moonlight tackles controversial issues head-on, described as a mix of Damien Dempsey and Public Enemy in the Irish Times. He is currently recording his fourth album ‘Offences against the State’ and played Glastonbury festival.  ‘Fathoms’ is beat production sound system controlled by Tim Ording who has been a consistent presence on the electronic/ hip hop scene since the nineties.  He is most recently known for his work as Melodica Deathship. Also on the bill is Limerick’s innovative  Flying Buttresses featuring rapper Sebi C and DJ/producer Deviant.

MAMLimerick_29062013_0081-copy-3Friday July 26, Paul Tarpey will chair a public discussion on the politics and practices that surround contemporary street art. Later in Ormston House, The Tackie Jam is a unique celebration of local Hip Hop talent featuring RAOK (Random Acts Of Kindness)  crew from Shannon plus guest performers from the music, art and dance workshop strands of the festival.

Saturday 27 brings a US-style Block Party to Thomas Street. It is a celebration of hip hop culture featuring Bboy Bazzy B and the Limerockers Cru, Javier Ceone (Spain), Bboy Tommy ‘Guns’ Ly (US) and Bboy Iron Monkey all bringing their own unique blend of talents to the streets. The Paint Park Parade happening at People’s Park is a celebration of graffiti art. The after party is at The Library with DJ Johnny Moy and DJ Koncept. Subtle Audio showcases new breakbeat sounds in Dolan’s and Lady Grew MC’s at Blind Pig

On Sunday, Dance Cru’s from around the country are invited to Daghda Dance Hall to pit their skills against each other in the All Styles Dance Battle.

This event will pit various Cru’s  to battle it out in front of legendary Bboy and iLL Abilities member Tommy ‘Guns’ Ly and Bboy Iron Monkey.

The Blind Pig hosts the festival wrap party with DJ Peter Curtin and DJ Moschops and guests.

Make a Move happens in various venues around the city from Thursday July 25 to Sunday July 28.

Its the 10th anniversary of the boutique festival which runs from Friday August 30 to Sunday September 1.

Indie 2013: We are Scientists

JUST announced, US Indie rockers, We Are Scientists join the line-up for this year’s Indiependence Festival in Mitchelstown over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Already confirmed are Bastille, De La Soul and Kodaline among many others. Also added today are UK indie disco act, Cymbals, Ryan Sheridan, Foy Vance, New Sunset Hotel, Trucker Diablo and Walking on Cars.

The night will kick off with a flamenco guitarist to accompany the paella and sangria. Featuring comedy from Nostril Shorts, Mark O’Connor and metal band Shardbourne the event is free and happening at Cobblestone Joes on Little Ellen St. Thursday May 26.

IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation) have announced the call for entries for the 2010 IMRO Showcase Tour. Since 1992, Ireland’s most established new band showcase has provided a live platform for scores of up and coming Irish acts over the years. Recent acts to have featured include O Emperor, Fight Like Apes, Dirty Epics, Disconnect 4 and Delorentos to name but a few. Bands and solo artists across all genres of music are invited to apply for a place on the IMRO Showcase Tour 2010. Just send a website or MySpace link to showcase@imro.ie before Friday February 12th, 2010. Successful acts will be notified in early March. The gigs will run through March and April. The Limerick leg of the tour will happen in Dolans on Sat April 24th.

A number of artists will be chosen from the tour to perform in a ‘Best of Showcase’ gig which will take place in Dublin venue The Academy on April 30th.
