THE Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are back in Limerick with a brand new show to kick off the June Bank Holiday Weekend. The outfit is celebrating the release of a new album. It is a recording with the boys’ father Phil Cohran called Kelan Philip Cohran & the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, out now via Honest Jon’s Records.
HBE are 8 brothers, all the sons of Sun Ra trumpeter and songwriter Phil Cohran, playing since they were 3 years of age. Multi-instrumentalist, Philip Cohran is now 86. He’s fathered many children, eight of whom make up the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. He’s played in Sun Ra’s Arkestra in the 1960’s and has been a leading figure in the Chicago Jazz scene for many decades. Father and sons have now collaborated for their first album together. Record label, Honest Jon’s have put together a short video to promote the new album. Watch it on www.musiclimerick.com.
The brothers’ profile has risen even higher since collaborating with Damon Albarn’s recent projects Rocket Juice & the Moon and of course Gorillaz. Now on release on the Choice Cuts website is the HBE’s new single ‘Fire’ with remixes from Mr.Scruff and Cork’s Colin Kenefick.
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble play Dolan’s on Thursday May 31.
